Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that there is a slight intensification of trade talks with the United States. However, the final progress and deals may depend on America moving closer to Canada’s position, he added.
“To the extent any progress has been made, it’s because the US is coming closer to our position,” Carney said during the press conference in Ottawa.
Upon a question regarding whether the onset of US midterm elections could pressure the Trump administration, Carney said there had been no change in pressure for the Canadian government to make a deal. This statement underlined that Canada remains committed to sealing an equitable agreement.
The interaction and comments were made in the context of a progressing deal between the US and Canada regarding the tariffs on Canadian steel and automobiles.
There have been very few movements of trade between Canada and the United States after the haggling fell apart in August. Carney halted negotiations, referring to the last-minute demands the US put forth that were deemed untenable for the Canadian government.
Last Wednesday, Carney spoke to Trump about the geopolitical and trade issues. On Friday, Trump responded that Canada “ was working very hard" to get a trade deal with the US, as per reports from National Post.
